We are continuing National Distracted Driving Awareness Month with the third principle in our S.A.F.E. framework – Fit to Drive.
Being fit to drive is a personal commitment to showing up physically and mentally prepared every time you get behind the wheel. Illness, medication, stress and fatigue can all affect your readiness in ways that are not always obvious. Unfortunately, the outcome is the same: you will not be able to react as quickly when it counts.
National Safety Council data suggests that driving after 20 hours without sleep can diminish reaction times as significantly as being at the legal limit for alcohol.
The highest risk often exists during the transition between the jobsite and home. Whether in a work truck, a crew van or your personal vehicle, driving to work or heading home without being fully fit can have life changing consequences for you and others on the road.
Fit to Drive principle emphasizes:
Supervisors, use this week to have direct conversations with your teams about the importance of being "Fit for Duty" in the driver's seat and the importance of being mentally and physically fit before getting behind the wheel. Employees, before every trip, please take the time to assess your readiness to help ensure you are able to get home to the people who matter most. Talk to your family and friends about what it means to be Fit to Drive – when your loved ones understand these principles, they become your partners in ensuring every trip ends safely.
Next week we close out the month with the fourth and final principle: Eliminate Distractions.
Thank you for being ready and fit.
